A multidisciplinary stage production that weaves dance, circus, poetry, music and video art into a universe inspired by Remedios Varo.
A show by Ana Sofía Vázquez
Teatro Estelar · Mexico City
A multidisciplinary show that recreates the universe of surrealist painter Remedios Varo. Her characters, landscapes and worldview leave the canvas and come to life through circus, theatre, dance, poetry, original music and video projections, immersing audiences in a dreamlike world.
Within a walled city, the Novice and her companions embroider the Earth’s mantle at the top of a tower. A Fern Cat from another dimension takes one of the threads and playfully carries it far from the town.
Following the cat, the Novice reaches a hollow tree and encounters the Portal Guardian, a mysterious, ethereal being who guards the entrance to a magical forest inhabited by fantastical characters.
So begins a journey of transformation through different planes of reality, where she discovers the invisible threads connecting the earthly world to the far reaches of the cosmos.

The dramaturgy creates an initiatory journey inspired by 16 paintings by Remedios Varo. The Novice’s path draws a metaphorical parallel with the painter’s life, exile and the search for freedom, identity and transformation.
Five elements transform the space: multimedia, lighting, mobile houses, aerial apparatus and the performers’ bodies. Circus movement becomes a metaphor for the characters’ inner journeys.
The production explores displacement, intolerance, diversity and the possibility of creating a place of one’s own. It also pays tribute to a woman who asserted her voice as an artist and opened paths towards imagining other realities.
“To bloom in times of bitterness is the greatest act of rebellion.”
